Why Alberta Teachers Are Fighting Bill 2

Last fall, as teachers were on strike, the Alberta government forced teachers back to work using the notwithstanding clause, essentially overriding teachers' rights to collective bargaining for a five year period.

Teachers were fighting for better supports in classrooms and fair wages.

The Alberta Teachers' Association is challenging the legislation in court and our application will be heard in early March 2026.

We've heard loud and clear from teachers that being forced back to work, in violation of their rights, has had a major impact on well-being. In a survey of ATA members, 91% reported that the government's use of the notwithstanding clause was detrimental. Just 13% felt that their views were respected by the provincial government.

The ATA is challenging Bill 2 on the basis that it violates teachers' charter rights of freedom of association and freedom of expression. Given that nearly 80% of teachers are women, the ATA is also arguing that the legislation violates the protections for gender equality.

The decision to go on strike was not taken lightly by teachers, who were fighting for improvements to classrooms. Last fall, we heard loud and clear that parents knew that things needed to change in Alberta classrooms.

The Alberta Teachers will keep fighting to restore teachers' rights and keep pushing for improvements to classrooms.
